6 Genius Brow Tips From Celebrity Makeup Artist Suzie Moldavon ...

Last week, after a frustrating attempt to shape her own brows, India-Jewel posted a beauty poll to find out your brow grooming habits, and we learned that a lot of you do it yourselves. Because we couldn’t leave you hanging, we enlisted celebrity brow guru Suzie Moldavon, whose eclectic roster of clients includes Lady Gaga, Vampire Diaries' Candice Accola, and Megan McCain, to share her pointers for getting perfect brows at home.

Suzie runs her own beauty business in LA and tames brows all over town (mine included!). According to her, it’s simple! Half the battle is determining the best brow for your face...

First off, put down your tweezers and give your brows at least two weeks to grow, like Kate did. Three things you can do to get you through it: 1) Rely on your eyebrow pencil or powder, 2) Tweeze around the marked areas to clean up eyelids and areas that will not be part of your new brow shape, and 3) Use a pink highlighter pencil to disguise hair growth under the brow.

Step 1: Create symmetry. Start with a straight edge (like a ruler or a nail file) and stand in front of the mirror. Place the straight edge across the bridge of your nose and line up the bottom of the front of each brow. Do they start in the same place on your face on both sides? Or is your straight edge leaning higher or lower on one side? Whenever there is a spot that doesn’t line up, make a mark with an eyebrow pencil. Repeat this same step with the top of the front of each brow and the arch of each brow.

Step 2: Determine brow shape. Next, evaluate each brow individually by taking your straight edge and placing it at the bottom front of the brow up to the arch. Use your pencil and fill in whatever space is above your straight edge. The arch should begin to round at the highest point, just outside each eyes' iris (the pretty colored part) and then naturally taper toward the end.

Step 3: Check the space in the middle. Now check the middle, (the uni-brow area), which is one of the most commonly over-tweezed spots. The proper place for the eyebrow to start is straight up from the ball of your nose (not the edge of your nostrils!). Turn your straight edge perpendicular to the floor and place it from the ball of your nose up to your eyebrow.

Take an eyebrow pencil or powder and draw in the corrections of any uneven spots you found during the test, and… voila! This is your new brow shape! You might be close to perfect already, or perhaps you have even more growing to do, but now you can see what the ideal eyebrow shape for your face is.

Ready to tweeze? Here are three genius tips to live by...

Tip 1. Use the one finger rule. The general rule for the middle is to only tweeze what fits under your index finger above your nose. This will give the hairs in front of the brows a chance to grow back. You can always trim them if they don’t grow straight rather than tweeze them.

Tip 2. Meet in the middle. It is every beauty expert’s goal to make your two separate brows look as similar as possible. So if during the test you realize that one brow is higher than the other, you'll want to split the difference. Tweeze a little bit off the top of the higher brow and a little bit off the bottom of the lower brow. If you have some growing to do, leave the tweezing for next month when you can assess and retake the test with a little more growth.

Tip 3. Trim your brows. This can also make a significant difference in the cleanliness and shape of your brows. Here's how to trim: brush brows up, or in the direction they grow, and then turn your scissors against the hairs and cut whatever is above the brow-line. The scissors should be parallel to the brow to give them a straight clean edge. DON’T hold the hairs up with the brush and cut, or you will end up with a crazy brow line! Just keep brushing and trimming until the line looks neat and straight.
