'Batman' star Anne Hathaway extols virtues of vegan diet – Examiner ...

Actress Anne Hathaway, who stars as Catwoman in the new Batman sequel, “The Dark Knight Rises,” follows a mostly vegan diet because it makes her look and feel great.

“I don’t go the soy-meat route; I have a really plant-based diet,” Hathaway told USA Today. “So I wind up cooking at home a lot. Kale is amazing. Spelt a kind of wheat pasta is amazing. I can’t do the white-flour stuff. It makes me really ill.”

Hathaway initially embraced a vegan diet to help her lose weight for several film roles, including the “Dark Knight Rises” and the drama, “Les Misérables.” She stayed with it because she liked it.

For “Les Misérables” (which she just finished shooting), Anne lost 15-25 pounds by crash-dieting. While subsisting on tiny meals of fruit and vegetables was difficult, Hathaway earned praise from the film’s director for her commitment and work ethic.

“I would say Annie is among the best-prepared actors I’ve ever worked with,” gushes Tom Hooper.

For the “Dark Knight Rises,” the lithe 5-foot-9 Anne took four months of dance, martial arts and stunt training. The role required her wear a sexy, skintight latex costume, which tested her self-discipline.

“Keeping a consistent weight was hard,” she says. “I worked really hard, but I wouldn’t describe it as killer. I was able to shift my entire life so it became about transforming myself into the character.

“Everyone in my life understood, and if I went out to meals with friends they understood that I could only go to certain restaurants. It required a ton of hard work and discipline, which I never had to do before.”

After shooting a key scene, Hathaway, 29, let loose by binging on pizza. “After I finished the rooftop fight, I ate four slices of pizza and split a bottle of red wine with my guy,” she recounts. “I hadn’t eaten like that in months. I felt so ill.

“By the time the movie finished, I decided to give veganism a try. You can’t go hog-wild as a vegan. You can eat a lot of pasta and have a few vegan pastries.”
