Chelsea celebrity townhouse—the historic property at 436 West 20th Street where Courtney Love and Olivier Sarkozy once rented apartments—was on the market back in 2010 for $21 million. But the house was pulled, and at the time, the co-owner and broker said the house wouldn’t return to market because the high-end rentals were doing so well. But times change (and there’s some other redevelopment going on in the neighborhood), and we woke this morning to a fresh listing for the house, now asking $18.95 million. It’s still split into five units, but the floorplan includes a note that “owner is willing to deliver as single family,” so there’s that.
The listing photos are small but the brokerbabble ample. An excerpt:
Original chandeliers of Czechoslovakian crystal dating from 1830, hang from the ballroom and family room ceilings. The building also has a beautiful south garden and south facing terraces from every floor. Developed by Don Alonzo Cushman and built for the estate of John N. Smith, this 5-story 1835 mansion between 9th and 10th Avenues, has been meticulously restored. It is situated directly across from the picturesque Episcopal Seminary gardens, and directly faces into the Close….To further the richness of its views, 436 West 20th is about 40′ deeper and 15′ taller than its neighboring houses. The building is bathed in light all day and faces lush townhouse gardens in the rear, to the West and the South, and has river views from its upper floors and terraces….It’s clean lines and greatly scaled rooms are washed in the wonderful colors of the great Federal period of American architecture, which is enhanced by light from three exposures. 21st century amenities — such as a large elevator that can fit 4 to 5 people, wiring for video security, and all new systems — have been seamlessly integrated into the home. In addition, every room has a floating wall and floor system buffered with three layers of state-of-the-art insulation called QuietRock (a technology from Quiet Solution).
Here’s the floorplan:
