Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted that she failed to complete a challenge from celebrity chef Mario Batali, in which she was to live on the equivalent of what someone on food stamps would live on during a week.
The actress was tasked with spending just $29 on food for one week, as those on government assistance do, and she lasted only four days.
"As I suspected, we only made it through about four days, when I personally broke and had some chicken and fresh vegetables (and in full transparency, half a bag of black licorice)," she wrote on her website, Goop.com.
Actually, she had more than that. She was spotted dining with rumored new beau Brad Falchuck, co-creator of hit Fox series Glee, and the two spent their evening out at L.A. barbecue restaurant Animal and feasted on pig ears, veal tongue and fried rabbit legs, according to People magazine. But...
"My perspective has been forever altered by how difficult it was to eat wholesome, nutritious food on that budget, even for just a few days -- a challenge that 47 million Americans face every day, week, and year. A few takeaways from the week were that vegetarian staples liked dried beans and rice go a long way -- and we were able to come up with a few recipes on a super tight budget."
While we usually equate failure with an F, Paltrow says she would give herself a C minus (because of course she did).
"I'm not suggesting everyone eat organic food from some high horse in the sky," she adds, "I'm saying everyone should be able to afford fresh, real food. And if women were paid an equal wage, families might have more of a choice in the grocery aisles, not to mention in the rest of their lives."
On the bright side, Paltrow's failure did help raise awareness of the Food Bank New York City Challenge, which wants people to know what it's like to live under the conditions of the current Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is facing government cuts that will ultimately impact millions receiving assistance.
Here's what the actress bought at the store for the week on her $29...
